How to tell if your business is actually off-course by 1°

Have you ever wondered if 1° actually matters?  “So what if we’re ‘out’ by 1°. That doesn’t make a difference at all”, you’re probably thinking.

So, does 1° “off course” really matter in business? It does seem pretty small, right?

And, you might be right for thinking that it doesn’t really matter – if you’re not thinking long-term.

As a former military and commercial pilot,  there is an incredibly powerful rule of thumb called the 1 in 60 rule which states that for each degree ‘off course’ the pilot has flown across 60 nautical miles, that an error in track of one nautical mile will result. In other words, if you travel 60 miles, and your heading is 1° off, you’ll actually be 1 mile away (to the side) from where you should be. You’re essentially 1 mile off course. As you can see, it’s not a big deal for a short distance of say 60 miles.

It’s simple to do the math though, if you’re traveling longer distances.

Travel 600 miles and you’re now 10 miles off course.

1200 miles and you’re waaay off of at least 20 miles away.

As in business, it gets worse the further you need to go. And, it can be tragic if the amount you’re flying off-course results in getting away from the safe space that an aircraft is normally afforded.

The course corrections are critical, as these are the smaller, tactical things that get done along the way – that ALIGN with your strategy, otherwise they will continue to push you off-course. The strategy gets you to the destination, the course-corrections ensure
